Students from Walsall alternative provision school reach national football final

On Tuesday 20 May, students from The Ladder School, an Alternative Provision school in Walsall and part of The Mercian Trust, came first place in the Midlands qualifying tournament of the Engage in Their Future football competition.

Not only did the team finish a phenomenal first place in the standings out of nine teams across seven schools, they also won praise for their exemplary sportsmanship from the organisers and their opponents, in their first ever competitive football match.

Their victory has now earned them a coveted place in the national finals, representing the Midlands, which will see 12 teams from across the country competing to win the league. This will take place at St George's Park - known as 'the home of England football' - on Tuesday 17 June.

They were supported to their success by dedicated staff who believe in the amazing things students at The Ladder School can achieve.

Adam Virgo, Learning Coach, said;

The Ladder School recently took part in a regional football tournament, where our students not only showcased exceptional skill on the pitch but also stood out for their exemplary behaviour and sportsmanship. Throughout the competition, they played with unity, respect, and a strong sense of togetherness, earning praise from staff members of other schools. Their efforts were rewarded with a first-place finish in the standings, securing their place in the national finals.

We are incredibly proud to announce that our team will now represent The Midlands at the prestigious St George’s Park where they will compete against eleven other schools from across the country.

Ruth Williams, Associate Headteacher, said;

This is an outstanding achievement for our students where their grit, determination and sportsmanship shone through and we are so very proud of them.
